OUR STORY

Verde Flower Co. was a business founded and built by my Mum, Caroline Beck in 2016. I joined forces with her during 2020, in the heat, fear, and loss of the covid-19 pandemic.

My name is Roisin, I’m a 29 year old flower grower living in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. By day I’m a co-director for UK Youth for Nature, by early morning, afternoon and evening I am a flower farmer, florist and Nuffield Farming Scholar.

In 2023, Mum has decided to stop growing flowers in order to walk the length of the UK, and meanwhile I’m looking for new land to grow on and having a sabbatical whilst I research the British Cut Flower industry for my scholarship.

I am looking to create a business that aligns with what I want to see from the world, and is climate proofed for the 2 degree warmer world that is on the horizon. This means that whatever stems I use, grow, or sell, will be guaranteed to be pesticide, herbicide and fungicide free. My flowers will always be grown in a peat-free medium, and the flower farm will centre nature at its heart.

History

Verde Flower Co. would be nothing without Caroline - AKA my mum. Some might in fact call me a floral nepo-baby and honestly, I won’t begrudge you that. Verde Flower Co. started out as a determination to do something different in the flower farming world. Seven years ago, there were only a handful of growers out there who were beating that drum for British grown flowers. Mum used her voice as a writer and journalist to support others, to advocate for the environmental benefits of buying British flowers and the joy of scented blooms that hadn’t been imported across the globe.

During the pandemic I began to work alongside Mum in the rented space we operated out of, a Victorian Walled Garden in County Durham. I have no formal horticulture training, but I do love to learn and luckily for me, Mum loves to teach. Over the course of a few years she taught me everything she could about growing, giving me space to grow and to fail and to experiment. I have never found joy - and stress! - quite like it.

We left our rented space in May 2023, after 4 years there, and 7 years in business for Mum, but the idea of moving to another growing space was tough. I am now looking for new land to start growing flowers at scale again, weaving in the learnings from my Nuffield Farming Scholarship to create a business that is nature friendly, climate adapted and full of fun.

Mum is off walking the length of the UK for her next adventure, something she has wanted to do for a long while. As the adventure unfolds for Verde Flower Co. over the next few years, I suspect you might see her face popping up again.
